Bardi elder Roy Wiggan was born and raised on Sunday Island Mission, just north of Broome. The Bardi term, ilma, refers to both the ceremonial dances or corroborees, and to the dance wands used within them. The designs for the wands and dances come from songs sent to Bardi men by rai, spirits of the dead. Here the influence of the sea can be felt in every aspect of life and culture, including in designs for the ilma that Wiggan creates.
