Rebecca Hobbs’s work combines references to everyday snapshot photography underscored by a rigorous interrogation of the history of cinema. With sardonic wit, Hobbs explores pictorial conventions and how they relate to social and narrative structures. Made while living in the US, enabled by a travelling scholarship opportunity, this series ‘Western’ explores the well-trodden macho tropes of the cinematic western genre in terms of the importance of the arid desert landscape in creating a backdrop for the performative gender role-play enacted between her dueling subjects.
