There is nothing wrong with seeking a second opinion from another specialist, particularly if you have cancer, a rare diagnosis or need surgery that is high risk. It is not always easy to find an experienced specialist.
A second opinion provides a fresh and independent review of your case. This hopefully confirms your diagnosis and treatment plan, which will be very reassuring. Importantly, you may gain a better understanding of your diagnosis and treatment. It is also possible that another specialist’s opinion may provide a different viewpoint on your condition. Providing you with alternative treatment and management options which may not have been considered or discussed.
Most patients with a cancer diagnosis do have a window period in which they can seek a second opinion without it impacting on their treatment outcomes. It is however well-recognised that treatment of head and neck cancers should commence within 4 weeks of diagnosis. So, if you are seeking another opinion I encourage you to discuss this with your GP or specialist as soon as possible. I also offer this online second opinion service which I hope will to some degree facilitate the process.
